Morrison successful in re-election bid
Kootenay-Columbia will have a Conservative Party Member of Parliament once again, as incumbent Rob Morrison earned 43.8% of the 61,150 votes cast in the riding in the 44th general election.
Elections Canada reports that 265 of 266 (99.62%) of riding polls have been reported.
Former MP and City of Cranbrook Mayor Wayne Stetski finished second, capturing 22,210 (36.2%) votes as the NDP candidate.
Balfour resident Robin Goldsbury received 5,474 votes (nine per cent) as the Liberal Party candidate, while Invermere resident Sarah Bennett received 4,316 votes (7.1 %) as People’s Party of Canada candidate and Rana Nelson of the Green Party captured 2,407 votes (3.9%).
Nationally, Justin Trudeau’s Liberals are returning to power for a third straight term, but not with the hoped-for majority, which prompted the $600 million, 36-day election campaign during the fourth wave of the COVID-19 pandemic.
The Liberals have won 158 seats, with Erin O’Toole’s Conservatives taking 119 seats.
The Bloc Québécois took 34 seats, while the NDP earned 25 seats. The Green Party captured two seats.
In Kootenay-Columbia 61,150 of 95,518 registered electors (60.81 %) cast votes. That figure does not include electors who registered on election day.
