New public board member sought for Columbia Region

Build skills on supportive team and guide fish and wildlife compensation projects

The board responsible for conserving and enhancing fish and wildlife in watersheds impacted by BC Hydro dams is recruiting a new member to join its Columbia Region board. This is a great opportunity to make a difference for the local environment and build skills on a supportive team.

The Fish & Wildlife Compensation Program (FWCP) funds fish and wildlife projects in the Columbia Region which includes the Kootenays, as well as the North Columbia – north of Revelstoke and Golden, up to the Valemount area.

As part of the 17-member board, you will review and evaluate grant applications, participate in strategic discussions, join in consensus-decision making processes, and contribute to the region’s annual operating plan. This year the Columbia Region board approved approximately $5.3 million for 25 fish and wildlife projects.

“Board members provide essential strategic direction to the FWCP and ensure the projects we fund are effective,” said FWCP’s Columbia Region manager, Jen Walker-Larsen, who explains that the FWCP is a five-way partnership between BC Hydro, the Province of BC, First Nations, Fisheries & Oceans Canada, and public interest holders. The FWCP offers a flexible meeting schedule and compensation for board members.

“We know the ideal candidates are likely already busy people and we want to encourage anyone interested to learn more about this opportunity to use your skills and build new ones,” said Walker-Larsen. “As a public representative on the board, we want you to bring a regional perspective to the board table and be prepared to make a three-year commitment.”
