New snowfall alerts cover region
Environment Canada has issued a snowfall warning for the Elk Valley, while other areas of the East Kootenay are also expected to receive various amounts of precipitation today (Nov. 27).
Heavy snowfall and near-zero visibilities from blowing snow is expected in the Elk Valley, with 10 to 15 cm accumulation likely, with up to 20 cm in Fernie and area.
“An intense Pacific cold front will move across southeast B.C. late this morning. Further snowfall accumulations of 10 to 15 cm are expected before the front moves through. In addition, strong southwesterly winds gusting to 60 km/h will give areas of blowing snow and near zero visibility,” Environment Canada reported.
Mainroad East Kootenay Contracting has also issued a weather advisory for the region, noting the area outside the Elk Valley will also be getting various amounts of snow.
Approximately five to 10 cm of snowfall is expected in the Cranbrook, Kimberley and Yahk areas, with snow is forecasted to stop later this morning and with temperatures dropping this evening, Mainroad warned.
“Approximately two to four cm of snowfall has occurred in the Columbia Valley with 10 cm of snowfall by Panorama. Currently light snowfall with snow tapering off into this afternoon,” Mainroad reported in a stakeholder notification.
“Mainroad Crews are currently out responding to the current snow accumulation. Environment Canada has issued a special weather statement of a period of heavy snowfall and blowing snow is expected to continue throughout the morning. Please do not pass snowplows while they are working for your safety as well as the operators,” the regional highways contractor noted.
Environment Canada advises drivers to be prepared to adjust their driving with changing road conditions. Rapidly accumulating snow could make travel difficult over some locations. Visibility may be suddenly reduced at times in heavy snow.
Motorists should use caution, drive to the conditions, and prepare for delays caused by the weather. Drivers should check DriveBC before heading out.
Mainroad’s 24-hour communications and dispatch office will pass on all your observations and concerns to our crews when contacted.
