Nicole Cherlet launches election campaign with online event
Columbia River-Revelstoke’s candidate for the BC NDP, Nicole Cherlet, kicked-off her campaign Sunday via Facebook Live. The online forum included speeches from provincial leaders offering their support for Cherlet’s candidacy.
Katrine Conroy, who prior to the election was the Minister of Children and Family Development, highlighted the BC NDP government’s investments in affordable childcare. Columbia-River Revelstoke has received $10 million in funding and seen the creation of 223 new spaces. Conroy stated she looked forward to working with Cherlet in Victoria and said, “I think your credentials will be an amazing asset to our NDP caucus and also to our rural caucus.”
Among the speakers was Wayne Stetski, former MP for Kootenay-Columbia, who said “Nicole will be an excellent MLA because she is a great listener, she’s energetic, and she’s caring.”
Stetski, BC NDP’s candidate in Kootenay East, also spoke about the NDP’s strong commitment on the environment and climate change, and local issues like keeping Jumbo (Valley) wild. After a decades-long dispute, it was announced earlier this year that the Jumbo Valley would be protected in partnership with the Ktunaxa Nation.
Selina Robinson, who prior to the election was the Minister of Municipal Affairs and Housing, outlined the government’s actions to make housing more affordable, noting Columbia River-Revelstoke has received investments of over $45 million to build new housing units in communities across the riding.
“I look forward to having Nicole around the table so we can keep delivering for British Columbians,” said Robinson.
Cherlet closed off the event with a speech highlighting her background, reasons for running this election, and vision for province: “If we can listen and really ask the people what it is that will really make a difference, we make sure that we do the best we can with what we have for the generations to come. Together we’re going to do that and I’ve seen John Horgan have that impact – he has the right initiative, the right ideas, and the vision to get us there.”
The provincial election is planned for Oct. 24.
