Weather-permitting, crews from the City of Cranbrook, with assistance from the British Columbia Wildfire Service, are planning a prescribed burn at the River’s Crossing Park over the next two weeks.

The date and timing of the prescribed burn will be conditional on weather conditions closer to the day of the burn.

For the prescribed burn to be carried out safely, part of the NorthStar Rails-to-Trails will be closed temporarily between the River’s Crossing parking lot and the Wycliffe Bridge at the St. Mary’s River on the day of the burn, as well as the day after (mop-up).

A detour will be in place at the Wycliffe Road trail intersection and follow Wycliffe Park Road all the way to River’s Crossing, where users can rejoin the trail. Signage and barricades will be in place. Trail users are asked to please follow the directions provided on the signage and barricades.

Nearby residents are asked to keep doors and windows closed tight to help keep any smoke out of their homes.

This burn is part of our overall Community Wildfire Protection Plan. The prescribed burn is being conducted to remove surface fuels as part of long-term restoration activities.

These areas adjacent to the city have historically burned once every 10-15 years, resulting in very low fuel loading. Maintenance burns are expected to occur every 10-15 years on an ongoing basis.
