Provide input on provisions of the Human Rights Code
Local MLA on committee
A special committee of the legislative assembly invites input on provisions of the Human Rights Code that relate to the human rights commissioner.
In 2018, amendments to the Human Rights Code established the human rights commissioner as an independent officer of the legislature. The commissioner is responsible for promoting and protecting human rights in B.C., including by promoting the elimination of discriminatory practices, policies and programs, and by delivering public information and education about human rights.
Sections 47.01 to 47.24 of the Human Rights Code set out the mandate and powers of the commissioner and provide the mechanisms for their appointment, compensation and suspension. The legislation requires a review of these sections by a special committee at least once every five years. This is the first review, a Legislative Assembly of British Columbia media release explained.
The special committee is accepting written input until Sept. 26, at 3 p.m. (Mountain time) through the parliamentary committee’s consultation portal: https://consultation-portal.leg.bc.ca/
The special committee will review all input with a view to invite presentations in early 2026. The special committee includes MLAs from government and the official Opposition.
The members of the committee are:
* Jennifer Blatherwick, MLA for Coquitlam-Maillardville (chair);
* Teresa Wat, MLA for Richmond-Bridgeport (deputy chair);
* Scott McInnis, MLA for Columbia River-Revelstoke;
* Rohini Arora, MLA for Burnaby East;
* Dana Lajeunesse, MLA for Juan de Fuca-Malahat.
