RDEK Board Highlights

The following is a synopsis of what occurred during the Oct. 7 Regional District of East Kootenay (RDEK) board of directors’ meeting.

Purchase option to be further explored for Windermere Water

RDEK wallThe board has asked staff to further explore the option to purchase Parr Utilities to provide treated water for the Windermere Community Water System Service Area. Staff will undertake a detailed review of the option including the potential impacts to the Service Area and Parr’s existing customers. The results of the review will be shared with the Board and the community.

Application to be submitted for Floodplain Mapping and Hydrology Study

An application will be submitted to Emergency Management BC under the National Disaster Mitigation Program for a floodplain mapping and hydrology study for the Hosmer, Vanlerberg Road and Hill Road areas.

Expressions of Interest sought for fibre-optic backbone strands


A request for expressions of interest will be advertised for the use of up to six strands of the Columbia Valley Fibre-Optic Backbone to provide connectivity of RDEK facilities and improve accessibility of high speed internet in the Columbia Valley. The request will be posted on the “Tenders” page on the RDEK’s website.

The Chair and CAO have signed a construction agreement with Fiorentino Brothers Contracting to realign the access road at the Central Subregion Landfill.

RDEK to partner with Greenways Trail Alliance on grant application


The RDEK will partner with the Columbia Valley Greenways Trail Alliance on a grant application to the BC Rural Dividend Program for construction of the Westside Legacy Trail. A second joint funding application will be submitted to the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure’s BikeBC Program for up to $1,000,000 for the Trail.

RDEK continues funding for Community Energy Manager Program


The RDEK will participate in funding year four of the Community Energy Manager Program up to a maximum of $15,000 subject to BC Hydro hiring the contractor and continuing participation from the other funding partners.

Kimberley CenotaphCommunity Works Fund Grant approved for Veterans Memorial


The board has approved a Community Works Fund grant in the amount of $25,000 for the Kimberley Veterans Memorial Park Project.

Lake Windermere Ambassadors receive funding

The Chair and CAO have signed an agreement with the Lake Windermere Ambassadors to provide an annual contribution to the society’s programs for five years. The annual grant has been set at $10,000.

Discretionary Grants In Aid (DGIA)

The District of Invermere will receive $95,192.78 in funding from the Electoral Area F DGIA account over a five-year period (2017-2021). The funds will be used to purchase a room partition for the Columbia Valley Community Facility.

The Invermere Companion Animal Network will receive $1,800 from the Electoral Area F DGIA account and $400 from the Electoral Area G DGIA account for the demolition and removal of a garage.

The Kootenay Columbia Air Search and Rescue will receive a total of $6,000 to purchase airplane fuel to assist with training expenses. The funds will be provided from the Electoral Area DGIA accounts as follows: Area A $1,000; Area B  $1,000; Area C  $1,000; Area E  $1,000; Area F  $1,600; Area G  $400

Elk Valley and South Country Emergency Exercise


Wednesday, October 19 —8 a.m. to 4 p.m. 
The RDEK is sponsoring a full-scale emergency exercise in the Hosmer and Elko areas on Wednesday, October 19, which will include a simulated response by police, fire, Emergency Social Services and other agencies. This full-scale exercise will allow our emergency responders and program personnel to test our Emergency Response and coordination. The exercise runs from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. This is a full-scale mock exercise and is part of the routine testing and practice of our emergency program. Regular emergency services and access to health care facilities will not be affected during the exercise.

Proposed Bull River / Mayook Mosquito Control Service Open House

Wardner Community Hall
. Residents and electors of the Bull River and Mayook area are invited to attend an upcoming open house to learn more about the proposed Bull River/Mayook Mosquito Control Service. During the open house, RDEK staff will be available to provide information on the proposed service and voting process being conducted in November. The proposed service area boundary includes Mayook and portions of Bull River (excluding the townsite of Wardner).
