RDEK concerned about highway winter maintenance

The condition of East Kootenay highways is discussion number one in many places these days as Old Man Winter continues with his frosty antics.

It even hit the Regional District of East Kootenay (RDEK) board table today (Jan. 6) when directors voted on a motion put forward by Electoral Area E Director Jane Walter.

The board almost unanimously approved Walter’s motion asking “letters be sent to the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure and Mainroad Contracting with copies sent to Kootenay East MLA Bill Bennett and Columbia River-Revelstoke MLA Norm Macdonald expressing concern with the lack of adequate winter maintenance of roads and highways in the East Kootenay and requesting increased public education on the process for reporting changing road conditions and emergency situations.”

Electoral Area G Director Gerry Wilkie was the lone vote opposed to the motion. He said he finds the highways in the Columbia Valley “good” but noted that Cranbrook and area has a lot more snow than in the valley.

Electoral Area F Director Wendy Booth excused herself from the vote, explaining her husband works for Mainroad.
