RDEK supports guided hiking tours Crown application

The Regional District of East Kootenay (RDEK) board of directors Nov. 10 unanimously agreed to support Fernie Hiking Company Ltd.’s application for Crown Land Licence of Occupation for guided hiking tours along existing recreational trails in the Fernie, Upper Elk Valley, Fort Steele and Grasmere areas.

Fernie Hiking Company Ltd.’s application was passed along to the RDEK for referral by the Ministry of Forests, Lands, Natural Resource Operations and Rural Development.

“The referral indicates that projected hikes will average about four clients per day, for four days per week, over about 25 weeks per year,” a RDEK planning report outlined.

“The referral states that the trails and roads do not require any infrastructure, development or construction. Portions of the trail network cross existing private land and these areas will be removed from the license if one is granted.

“The proposal is consistent with the policies of the applicable OCPs and the Regional Sustainability Strategy,” noted the report.
