Road safety is in your hands

It’s easy to forget about those who work roadside.

You’re late for a meeting, heading to your child’s soccer practice, or thinking about your own worries.

You’re used to driving past workers in high-vis vests, paying them no mind. But roadside workers can’t afford to be distracted— even for a second.

Every year, drivers barrel through work zones. They hit cones and crash into Mainroad trucks.

Crews are constantly on edge, and work is delayed when drivers disrupt operations. It’s up to you to slow down and move over for flashing lights.

“Drivers really don’t understand how dangerous it can be. Our crews are sometimes working in low light and bad weather. They work 24/7. When someone is driving recklessly, our crews are put in danger. Safety depends on all of us. Please help get our crews home safe,” said Teagan Burton, General Manager of Mainroad East Kootenay Contracting.

When you see Mainroad crews, whether at the scene of an accident or performing roadwork, take one second to focus on them. Behind that yellow truck is a real person who is trying to keep the highways safe for you. You can keep the highways safe for them too.

Mainroad aims to schedule maintenance activities during off-peak traffic periods as much as possible. For road conditions and updates, check www.drivebc.ca.

To report unsafe road conditions or highway debris in the East Kootenay Service Area, please call Mainroad’s 24-hour public information hotline toll free at 1-800-665-4929.
