Mainroad East Kootenay Contracting Ltd.’s meteorological service is forecasting dry conditions will continue through Christmas Day before a new system approaches the morning of Boxing Day.

Isolated to scattered snow showers will linger over the area Saturday morning into Sunday evening producing moderate accumulations in the mountain peaks and a potential of five to 10cm of snowfall for Kimberley, and Fernie to Elkford.

For the compact snow surfaces that still remain, do drive with caution as the frozen rutted and bumpy sections can cause steering instability, Mainroad noted in a stakeholders’ update today (Dec. 25).

Driving tips include accelerate and de-accelerate slowly, increase your following distance, know your brakes, and check your tires beforehand.

Mainroad maintenance crews are continuously removing the compact snow/ice that has bonded to the pavement by plowing and continual application of chemicals and abrasives, and performing snow removal operations where necessary for tomorrows potential snowfall until the roadways are returned to the acceptable standard.

Motorists should expect unsettled weather, drive to the prevailing conditions, and prepare for delays caused by the weather, Mainroad advised.
