Severe thunderstorm watch for southern East Kootenay

Environment Canada May 17 reported conditions are favourable for the development of severe thunderstorms that may be capable of producing large hail and heavy rain.

The largest threat from the thunderstorms this afternoon and evening will be hail.

Areas where smoke is thin or non-existent will have the highest likelihood of thunderstorm development this afternoon.

Communities south of Ainsworth Hot Springs in the Central Kootenay and Kimberley/Cranbrook and Sparwood towards the U.S. border are most likely to see the strong thunderstorms with large hail.

“Large hail can damage property and cause injury. Intense lightning is likely with any thunderstorm that develops. Lightning kills and injures Canadians every year.

“Remember, when thunder roars, go indoors! Severe thunderstorm watches are issued when atmospheric conditions are favourable for the development of thunderstorms that could produce one or more of the following: large hail, damaging winds, torrential rainfall,” Environment Canada stated.
