Skier killed in avalanche near Revelstoke

On February 19, Revelstoke RCMP was notified by the BC Coroners Service of a fatality resulting from an avalanche in a heli‑skiing area southeast of Revelstoke.

Earlier in the afternoon, a skier was airlifted to Queen Victoria Hospital after being recovered from an avalanche in the Selkirk Mountains.

The individual had been skiing with three companions and a guide in a backcountry area when the avalanche occurred at approximately 2:04 p.m. The skier was located in the debris field under approximately 1.5 metres of snow, and CPR was initiated before transport to hospital.

Despite life‑saving efforts the skier was pronounced deceased.

Investigators have determined that there is no indication of criminality. The BC Coroners Service is leading the investigation, with assistance from the Revelstoke RCMP.

“This incident is a tragic reminder of the inherent risks that exist in the backcountry, even for experienced users,” said RCMP spokesperson Cpl. Brett Urano.

“We encourage everyone planning to travel in avalanche terrain to stay informed of current conditions, ensure they are properly equipped, and make conservative decisions to help keep themselves and others safe.”
