Snow expected to join cold snap

How about some snow to go with the cold snap?

Flurries are forecast to accompany the deep freeze that has descended on the region.

Along with periods of snow, temperatures will range from highs of -15 C to lows of -27 C in the Elk Valley and Kootenay National Park areas. Cranbrook, Kimberley and the Columbia Valley are also expected to receive periods of snow, with temperatures ranging from -13 C as a high to lows of -21 C (as forecast for this evening, Dec. 27), according to Environment Canada.

Mainroad East Kootenay Contracting Ltd. is alerting motorists to take caution as snow is forecast up to Saturday, Dec. 30.

ā€œWe can expect a few flurries through to the evening especially in the North, otherwise dry conditions are expected through to Thursday morning.Ā  A weak system will move in with flurries developing through Thursday afternoon before intensifying to light snow for Thursday night then tapering back to scattered flurries for Friday morning and afternoon,ā€ Mainroad noted in a weather update this evening (Dec. 27).

Between 20 to 40 cm of snow could fall around the region.

Tomorrow could receive possible accumulations from 8-15 cm of snow, Mainroad reported.

ā€œAnother system looks to push back into the region with light snow developing for Friday night into Saturday morning before tapering back to flurries with another 15-25 cm possible.Ā Temperatures are except to remain below -10C into the weekend,ā€ the highways contractor said.

Mainroad crews will be out patrolling to respond to conditions as they change.Ā Please be patient and give their crews room to work.Ā Please donā€™t pass snow plows.Ā Itā€™s not safe.Ā When drivers attempt to pass a plow truck, they put themselves, their passengers, the snow plow operator and other motorists at risk.
