Environment Canada this morning issued a snowfall warning for the Kootenay National Park and Yoho National Park areas, with 15 to 20 cm expected.

“A frontal system moving across B.C. will spread snow to Yoho Park – Kootenay Park beginning early this morning. Snow at times heavy will continue through tonight and taper off by Wednesday morning. Be prepared to adjust your driving with changing road conditions. Visibility may be suddenly reduced at times in heavy snow,” Environment Canada stated.

Additionally, Mainroad East Kootenay Contracting Ltd. this morning issued a weather event advisory to stakeholders predicting up to roughly 10mm of precipitation with the type of precipitation varying depending on location.

“A weather event is anticipated to impact the East Kootenay Service Area starting Tuesday morning. In northern and/or high-elevation parts of the service area, such as Panorama, Elkford and Crowsnest Pass, we are expecting snow starting Tuesday morning.  In other parts of the service area, such as Yahk, Cranbrook and other locations, we expect rain or rain-snow mix with much less deleterious effect to the roadway. At this point, the precipitation is expected to last until Wednesday afternoon,” Mainroad said.

“We are preparing for mixed winter conditions, including snow.  Motorists should expect deteriorating conditions – please drive to the conditions and prepare for delays caused by the weather.”

Environment Canada has also issued a snowfall warning for Highway 3 between Paulson Summit and Kootenay Pass.
