Snowfall warning for Kootenay Pass
Environment Canada this morning issued a snowfall warning for the Highway 3 stretch from Paulson Summit to Kootenay Pass.
Snowfall with total amounts of 15 to 25 cm is expected today.
Reduced visibility and accumulating snow will create hazardous driving conditions.
“An area of low pressure continues to push into the region from the southwest. Today, the snowfall warning criteria is most likely to be met with amounts near 15 cm in 12 hours expected. Snow showers will ease this evening,” Environment Canada reported.
“Additionally, periodically moderate winds of 20 gusting to 40 km/h could create areas of blowing snow. Visibility may be suddenly reduced at times in heavy snow.”
Weather in the mountains can change suddenly resulting in hazardous driving conditions. Prepare for quickly changing and deteriorating travel conditions.
If visibility is reduced while driving, slow down, watch for tail lights ahead and be prepared to stop.
The site shiftintowinter.ca reminds drivers to know before you go. Adjust to winter driving behaviour and use winter tires and chains. Road conditions are available at drivebc.ca, Environment Canada advised.
