Special weather statement for East Kootenay

Environment Canada this morning (May 31) issued a Special Weather Statement covering the East Kootenay, warning of moderate to heavy rain from today to Tuesday (June 2), with total rainfall amounts of 40 to 80 mm.

The statement covers East Kootenay and Yoho National Park and Kootenay National Park.

“A potent Alberta low pressure system will bring moderate to heavy rain to southeastern B.C. this weekend and into early next week. As snow levels decrease to as low as 1,600 metres, travellers and recreationalists are advised of winter conditions over higher elevations of the Yoho Park – Kootenay Park region,” Environment Canada stated.

“Currently, there is still uncertainty associated with the exact track of this system, and rainfall amounts will vary greatly across southeastern B.C. Highest rainfall amounts near 60 to 80 mm are possible over north- and east-facing slopes as well as communities and highways closest to the Alberta border.

“Up to 40 mm of rainfall is possible for areas further west. There is an elevated risk of flooding, landslides and washouts from heavy rain, and rain on snow in the mountains.”

Please continue to monitor your local forecast throughout the event. The B.C. River Forecast Centre provides information on current streamflow conditions and flooding alerts. Check DriveBC for road conditions. Please continue to monitor alerts and forecasts issued by Environment Canada.

A Flood Watch remains in place for the Kootenay River and tributaries.
