Storm watch in effect for entire region
Environment Canada has issued a winter storm watch in effect for the East Kootenay.
This watch, which covers the entire region, follows a snowfall warning issued earlier today for the Elk Valley. This watch is in effect for Sunday night and Monday.
A low pressure system crossing Washington state Sunday night will give heavy snow and wind to the Kootenays. Twenty-four hour snowfall totals from Sunday evening to Monday afternoon are expected to reach at least 25 cm, Environment Canada reported.
In addition, some areas may see poor visibility in blowing snow with winds of 30 to 40 km/h combined with the falling snow.
Environment & Climate Change Canada meteorologists are closely assessing the situation. This watch may be upgraded to a warning should the forecast position of the low pressure system remain on track.
Travel is expected to be hazardous due to reduced visibility in some locations. Poor weather conditions may contribute to transportation delays.
Please continue to monitor alerts and forecasts issued by Environment Canada. To report severe weather, send an email to [email protected] or tweet reports to #BCStorm.
Mainroad East Kootenay Contracting reported earlier today that crews are using the tow plow in the Elk Valley today and most likely tomorrow.
The company issued a reminder to motorists and residents to “please give our crews room to safely do their work. Please do not attempt to pass a tow plow or any winter operation equipment.”
