Wayne Stetski best candidate for fish and wildlife

Letter to the Editor

NDP candidate Wayne Stetski was the Regional Manager for the Ministry of the Environment for the Kootenays responsible for fish and wildlife from 2002 to 2009. If you think back to your hunting and fishing experiences at that time you will know that under Wayne’s watch our fish and wildlife populations in the Elk Valley were much healthier than they are today.

He also cared about hunting and fishing and their long-term health, bringing in the Junior – Senior hunting season, the turkey hunting season and giving special status to the Elk and Wigwam Rivers as Classified Waters.

Wayne has always said that he will be there for those who hunt and fish. When he was your Member of Parliament from 2015 – 2019 he was NDP Critic for National Parks and a Member of the Parliamentary Outdoor Caucus.

If Conservative MP Morrison actually spent more time in the Elk and Flathead valleys he would know that our fish and wildlife populations are struggling, and if we want to see a better future we need to look at conservation options.

It is primarily up to B.C. and the Ktunaxa to implement any changes that would lead to healthier wildlife and fish populations. It was not clear from a recent letter to the editor in e-KNOW that Mr. Morrison understands that the only significant parcels of federal land in southeast B.C. are the two Dominion Coal Blocks.

I would much rather have our Member of Parliament be an individual like Wayne Stetski who has actually lived in the East Kootenay for 31 years, has dedicated his life to healthy fish and wildlife populations, and will work hard to try and ensure a liveable environment for our children and grandchildren in the future in the face of the climate crisis.
