The current weather forecast has some real winter heading our way for the next four or five days, Mainroad East Kootenay reported this afternoon.

“The Highway 93/95 corridor is forecasted to see steady light snowfall up to five to eight cm over the next 48 hours, with steadily dropping temperatures. By late Sunday, expect -10C to -15C, lasting through the following week,” Mainroad stated.

The western section of the Highway 3 corridor will see similar conditions. The eastern section of Highway 3 corridor to the Alberta border is forecasted for up to 10cm with temperatures down to -20C by mid-week.

“Mainroad crews are currently pre-treating all numbered routes with chloride brine ahead of the forecasted snowfall. Once the precipitation begins, the priority will be numbered routes, followed by commercial/school bus routes and then side and residential roads,” Mainroad said in a public notice.

Motorists should expect and be prepared for winter driving conditions, please leave extra time and watch for plows and equipment working. Colder temperatures can create rapid freezing and visibility problems due to blowing snow.

Once temperatures drop below -9C, Mainroad crews will be switching to winter abrasives where required.
Mainroad will be updating DriveBC as and when conditions change so motorists should check for the latest updates before travelling.
