Winter storm and snow fall warning issued

Environment Canada has this afternoon (Feb. 7) issued a winter storm warning for the Elk Valley.

Heavy snowfall with blowing snow is expected.

“A Pacific frontal system will impact the Elk Valley region beginning tonight. Heavy snow, strong winds and blowing snow will develop overnight as the system approaches. Snowfall accumulations up to 25 cm are expected before conditions improve Thursday evening as the system moves out of the region and weakens. Consider postponing non-essential travel until conditions improve. Rapidly accumulating snow could make travel difficult over some locations. Visibility will be suddenly reduced to near zero at times in heavy snow and blowing snow,” the Environment Canada warning stated.

A snowfall warning is also in effect for the rest of the East Kootenay, including Kootenay National Park.

The same Pacific frontal system will spread heavy snow with strong northeasterly winds to the area. Total snowfall amounts around 10 cm can be expected on Thursday. The snow will ease. Thursday night as the system moves out of the region and weakens.

Snowfall warnings are issued when significant snowfall is expected.
