Winter storm warning for Kootenay Pass

If you have to travel west into the Central (West) Kootenay and Boundary areas this weekend, heads up.

Environment Canada has issued a winter storm warning for Highway 3 Paulson Summit to Kootenay Pass and a snowfall warning for the area between Castlegar/Trail to Grand Forks.

“A significant weather system is forecast to move across the B.C. interior this weekend. Snow will begin this afternoon and become heavy tonight. Snow will taper off to flurries Sunday evening as the system moves out of the area,” Environment Canada stated, noting 25 to 40 cm of snow is expected.

“Rapidly accumulating snow may result in challenging travel conditions with low visibility.

“Consider postponing non-essential travel until conditions improve. Rapidly accumulating snow could make travel difficult over some locations. Visibility may be suddenly reduced at times in heavy snow,” Environment Canada said.

“Weather in the mountains can change suddenly resulting in hazardous driving conditions.”
