Winter weather event coming: Mainroad

Mainroad East Kootenay Contracting Ltd. is alerting drivers to a winter weather event that is anticipated to impact the East Kootenay within the next 48 hours.

“We are expecting snowfall starting Saturday. Mainroad’s meteorological service predicts snow accumulation developing this weekend and tapering off to flurries on Sunday. Over the weekend, we expect we will see accumulations up to five to 10 cm in most areas. We expect to see heavier accumulations around 12 cm or more in southern regions, near the U.S. border,” Mainroad noted in a stakeholder update.

“Mainroad crews have been engaged in winter maintenance operations since the most recent snowfall, and we have reached bare pavement conditions on major routes in many parts of the Service Area. However, current temperatures are still very cold in some areas, and expected to remain cold after this weekend’s expected snowfall. This could cause compact snow to remain on the roadways. Motorists should expect winter driving conditions to continue into next week,” the regional highways contractor outlined.

“All motorists are encouraged to take extra precautions given the expected conditions this Family Day Long Weekend. If travel is necessary, allow more travel time and drive with extra caution.

“During and after the event, our crews will apply anti-icing chemicals and/or winter abrasive, and commence snow removal operations as required. This will continue on all highways until the event passes and roadways are returned to the acceptable standard and back to normal.”
