CBAL celebrates neurodiversity in the Elk Valley

The Columbia Basin Alliance for Literacy (CBAL) in partnership with local advocate Sarah Laverick is once again celebrating the diverse ways people think, learn, and experience the world with its second annual Celebrate Neurodiversity Community BBQ.

This free, family-friendly event will be held Saturday, August 23 from 12 to 3 p.m. at Rotary Park in Fernie.

Neurodiversity describes neurological differences like autism, ADHD, dyslexia, Tourette syndrome, and sensory processing disorder, to name a few, as natural variations of the human brain, not deficits to be “fixed.”

While these differences were once viewed as problems to overcome, the growing understanding in 2025 emphasizes a strengths-based approach. Many now recognize that neurodivergent individuals bring unique perspectives, creativity, and resilience that enrich our communities.

With support from a Vancouver Foundation Neighbourhood Small Grant, Laverick and CBAL are inviting the entire community to come together in celebration and learning.

“We want this event to be joyful, inclusive, and informative,” said Laverick. “Neurodiversity isn’t just something to be accepted, it’s something to be valued.”

In addition to a free lunch of hot dogs, chips, and a drink, the BBQ will feature a welcoming atmosphere where everyone can explore a variety of resources and activities.

Local organizations including Uplift Association and Sibshops Fernie, as well as Virginia Purcell who provides neurodivergent counselling, will be on hand to share information about their programs for neurodivergent individuals and their families.

Organizers are continuing to build partnerships with additional local support and services to showcase.

To keep the mood festive and engaging, the event will also include fun and accessible outdoor activities like giant bubbles, a low slackline, bocce, giant Jenga, Spike Ball and other games suitable for all ages and abilities.

Whether you’re a part of the neurodivergent community, a family member, a professional, or simply a neighbour or friend, this event offers a chance to connect, learn, and celebrate the rich spectrum of human minds that make up the Elk Valley.

Come and join CBAL and friends in recognizing and celebrating the value of neurodiversity and enjoy an afternoon of food, fun, and community connection.
