Driver has no recall how crash near Elko happened

On August 23 at 2:23 p.m., BC Ambulance contacted Elk Valley Regional RCMP to respond to a report of a vehicle accident in the 6200 block of Highway 3, just east of Elko.

The report received was a silver car in the ditch with one person trapped and injuries were unknown. Police responded with Fernie Fire Rescue and BC Ambulance.

Others were phoning the accident in, stating others on scene were trying to remove the older man from the truck.

Upon arrival, a large group of citizens were engaged at the scene, along with Fernie Fire Rescue who was attempting to remove the subject from the vehicle, reported S/Sgt. Svend Nielsen, Elk Valley RCMP Detachment commander.

“Witnesses at the scene report seeing the vehicle start tumbling, but there were no other issues on the road that may have caused the single car collision. Officers on scene report no signs of impairment on the driver, although the driver apparently was travelling with two cases of beer within the truck or truck bed,” he related.

“Speed was not a factor. The elderly driver does not recall what happened. Thankfully, injuries were relatively minor considering the extent of the vehicle damage (pictured above).

“Elk Valley RCMP wish to thank the individuals who attempted to help the man from the vehicle with care, as well as the semi-truck driver and local man who helped with flagging on the highway for over two hours.”
