Elk Valley districts reach out to city

The City of Fernie’s fellow Elk Valley municipalities have reached out with a show of support following the Fernie Memorial Arena tragedy yesterday, which claimed the lives of two city employees and a contractor with Cimco.
“As friends, family and colleagues mourn the loss of City of Fernie and Cimco employees lost in Tuesday’s incident within the Fernie Memorial Arena, the Districts of Elkford and Sparwood have extended their support to the City of Fernie to help the community in any way that they can during this tragic event,” a joint Sparwood/Elkford media release stated.

As has been reported in the media, the cause of this incident is believed to be exposure to ammonia.
The mayors of Elkford and Sparwood have directed that flags be lowered to half-mast in mourning of the lives lost within a municipal facility.
“Our thoughts and prayers as a community are with these families as they try to begin the struggle to cope with their unbearable loss,” stated District of Sparwood Mayor Cal McDougall.
District of Elkford Mayor Dean McKerracher shared his thoughts: “As a community we are deeply saddened by the loss suffered by our neighbours in Fernie – we send our condolences to the families.”
