Elk Valley RCMP Report
Charges recommended for breach of undertaking and intimidation of a justice system participant
On September 30, Elk Valley RCMP was advised of a breach of undertaking in the Baynes Lake area south of Elko. The complainant reports that the suspect, who was currently awaiting charge approval for a file involving uttering threats to a person(s), had consistently made contact with the victim and also attempted to get the victim to recant their original statement. The verbal abuse and verbal pressure applied had been significant enough to cause one of the victims to be admitted to hospital. Both parties involved provided statements to police.
The suspect was located, safely arrested and was held for a bail hearing with charges recommended for approval to be a breach of undertaking and intimidation of a justice system participant, along with the original offence of uttering threats. The 41-year-old man is scheduled to appear in Cranbrook court via video this week. The investigation continues.
Excessive speeder found to be impaired
On September 30, Elk Valley RCMP officers were working laser radar along Highway 3 near Fernie when one officer encountered a vehicle travelling in excess of 170 km/h along the highway. A second officer working in tandem observed the vehicle on moving radar going at 185 km/h. The small grey sedan being driven by a 25-year-old man from Fernie pulled over when directed to do so. Further investigation by the officer revealed signs of impairment which resulted in a “fail” reading on an approved screening device. Using Immediate Roadside Prohibition legislation, the driver requested a second test and forthwith failed that one as well. The officer served the driver with an excessive speed ticket, a 90-day driving prohibition and a 30-day vehicle impoundment. The driver was provided a ride to his residence as per his request.
Elk Valley RCMP officers are constantly on patrol and, unfortunately, routinely come across excessive speeders – which sometimes leads to impaired drivers. Don’t drink and drive. Don’t drive beyond your abilities and the approved speed limits on our highways. Our file is concluded.
Truck found vandalized and stripped of tires
On October 2, Elk Valley RCMP was notified of a possible recovered stolen truck along the Fording Highway near Elkford. The complainant had been out hunting and had come across an abandoned truck down a side road along the Fording Highway with its tires removed and back window smashed out. The officer contacted the registered owner and discovered the vehicle had been parked on company property above the area where it was found. The truck had been left where it was as the owner had gone back to another location over the weekend. It appears the truck was started and moved to the current location, where the rims and tires were removed. Value of the theft was approximately $2,500 dollars. The make of the rims and tires were not known. The vehicle was towed to an impound yard in Sparwood.
