District ending partnering agreement with chamber

The District of Elkford has made an operational decision to terminate the Partnering Agreement with the Elkford Chamber of Commerce effective May 31, as per a Feb. 27 council decision. The district will now coordinate the provision of visitor information services from the new Community Centre effective June 1, as well as event and volunteer coordination.

The district will work together with the Chamber of Commerce to further business and economic development opportunities for the Community.

East Kootenay Homeless Coalition Grant

On February 3, the Regional District of East Kootenay (RDEK) board resolved to approve a General Administration grant in the amount of $130,000 in each of the years 2012 and 2013 to the East Kootenay Homeless Coalition for construction of the homeless shelter in Cranbrook. This cost will be allocated to all RDEK electoral areas and municipalities on the basis of the number of dwellings in each jurisdiction. The total cost to Elkford is estimated at $6,122. The effect on an average residential property in Elkford is estimated at $2.59.

Proposed Line Creek Operations Phase II Project

The District of Elkford received correspondence from the Environmental Assessment Office advising that Teck Coal Limited’s proposed Line Creek Operations Phase II Project has been formally accepted. Provincial legislation requires that the detailed review of the proposed Project and the preparation of an Assessment Report for provincial Ministers be completed within 180 days. During this period, there will be at least one public comment period with a duration of not less than 30 days. The full Line Creek Environmental Assessment Report is available at the District of Elkford Municipal Office until the end of April.

Community to Community Forum

The District of Elkford approved travel expenses for Mayor McKerracher, Councillor McLean, Councillor Wildeman and Councillor Zarowny to attend the Community to Community Forum on March 7, in Cranbrook.
