Tembec Forest Stewardship Plan
A delegation from Tembec August 22 presented information to District of Elkford council on the Forest Stewardship Plan (FSP). The plan applies to areas covering Parson, Cranbrook/Elko, Canal Flats, Creston and Fernie/Sparwood. It consists of 13 distinct Forest Development Units (FDU). There are two FDUs in the Elkford area. FSP will expire on November 14 but Tembec is making application to extend the plan for another five year term. Council expressed their support for the plan extension.
Development Permit #11-03, 2200 Balmer Drive
Council authorized the issuance of the development permit for exterior renovations of the Chauncey Ridge Mall. The renovations will include new siding, a change to the roof design, and the addition of decorative motifs. Exterior lighting will be changed to dark sky cutoff lighting.
Development Permit #11-04, 3A Intata Road
Council authorized the issuance of the Development Permit for a large development in the Industrial Park that will include an office, a warehouse and a weld shop. The development is proposed on a large piece of land recently purchased by SMS Equipment from the District of Elkford.
Development Permit #11-05, 815 Michel Road
Council authorized the issuance of the Development Permit for four canopies over the existing emergency exits at the Elk Valley Pointe apartment complex to be constructed and finished with the same design and materials as the existing building, and enhanced with matching stone work. Additionally, the owner intends to replace the existing mercury vapor lighting on each exit canopy with the sharp cutoff dark sky lighting.
Mobile Treatment Centre Project
The District of Elkford awarded a contract to Code Three Emergency Vehicles Inc. to supply a 2011 Mobile Treatment Centre Slip-in Unit at a total cost of $20,272.00 including HST. The Unit will replace an old MTC vehicle and provide the capacity for the Fire Department to transport its employees to the hospital in the event of an injury. The District is obligated to provide such vehicle due to the high risk of some of the duties performed and due to the distance from a hospital.
Provincial Government Municipal Auditor General
The Provincial Government plans to establish a new office of the Municipal Auditor General. The District of Elkford was asked to provide answers to a survey on the proposed office. The District will issue a letter to the Minister of Community, Sport and Cultural Development advising that the district is not prepared to respond to the survey.
