Teck’s Elkford land donation celebrated

Teck has donated about 1.75 acres of land at 214 Alpine Way in the District of Elkford for the future location of the Elkford Housing Society’s new seniors’ housing project.

Elkford Housing Society chair Duncan McDonald said the donation greatly helps to kick-start their finances.

“This donation is a big step forward for the society. Now we can focus our efforts on grant proposals, mortgage applications and design in order to open as soon as we can to help seniors in need,” he said.

The new building will have amenities that cater specifically to seniors, which the community does not offer.

“With a third of our population over the age of 55, the demand for low maintenance, accessible accommodations is increasing,” McDonald said.

“On behalf of the District of Elkford and the community, I thank Teck Resources for this generous gift of land to the Elkford Housing Society. Our community has reached a stage where affordable housing for seniors is essential and this project will allow citizens to age in place and remain in our community. I also humbly thank all volunteers, past councillors and the Elkford Housing Society for their tireless efforts and passion in bringing this project to its current stage,” said District of Elkford Mayor Dean Mckerracher. “This is just one more step toward making Elkford a great place to live.”

Nic Milligan, Teck’s manager of Social Responsibility stated: “We are pleased to support the Elkford Housing Society on this project. A community that cares for and empowers all of its citizens is a truly sustainable community. Many of the seniors who will reside in these units helped to build the mines that continue to support the Elk Valley communities.”

The Elkford Housing Society hopes the seniors housing will be completed in late 2021 or early 2022.
