Well drilling alert for backcountry users near Elkford

The Elkford Chamber of Commerce today shared a notice to inform Elk Valley outdoor recreationalists and forestry road users of upcoming groundwater monitoring well drilling near Grace Creek and Corbin.

In January and February 2023, Teck Coal Ltd.’s Regional Groundwater team will be drilling to install additional groundwater monitoring wells on the Fording Road and near Andy Goode Creek (AGC) and the Flathead Valley Road Staging Area (FVRSA).

Data collected through those activities will be used to enhance Teck’s understanding of the geology and groundwater in the area as part of our regional groundwater monitoring program, the chamber explained.

What can you expect from these activities?

While there will be no impacts to access, highway trucks will be travelling along the forest service roads to the drilling locations in order to move equipment into the work areas. Equipment will then be staged, and drilling operations will commence, followed by equipment demobilization approximately two to three days later.

Work areas will not be closed to traffic, but extra caution will be required when travelling near the drilling locations.

Radio channels will be continuously monitored by the drilling team for kilometre calls and other notifications (RR3 for the Fording Road, and Coal Mountain LPO for AGC and FVRSA).

Signs will be posted on both ends of the work area to alert road users of the drilling operations ahead.

These operations are expected to conclude by March.
