Busy week for Fernie Fire and Emergency Services

Fernie Fire and Emergency Services Department (FFESD) has had a busy week, the City of Fernie reported today (Feb. 22).

This morning, firefighters responded to a motor vehicle incident (MVI) on Highway 3 that involved two semi-trailers and a SUV.

“The SUV ended up down the bank, in the river in about four feet of water and four feet from the bank, with the driver trapped. They used swiftwater resources to assist the driver to the bank and a technical rope rescue to get the driver up the slope to the roadside and to the ambulance,” the city outlined on social media.

On Tuesday night (Feb. 20), the department responded to a single motor vehicle accident where the driver was significantly injured.

“They needed to use road rescue tools to take off a car door to get the driver out, and to the necessary medical support,” the city said.

“These MVIs combined with a structure fire on Elkview Drive last Thursday (pictured) has kept our fire department very busy in the last seven days.

“Thank you to FFESD for your professional and efficient response to these major calls. We’re grateful to have a skilled composite fire department trained in so many areas.”
