Fernie battling localized flooding
Heavy rainfall is pushing wastewater flows beyond what the system can safely handle. To prevent a critical infrastructure failure, the City of Fernie has opened an emergency bypass at the Main Sewage Lift Station, resulting in a temporary release of untreated effluent into the Elk River.
Crews are also responding to localized flooding across town. A self‑fill sandbagging station is open on Railway Avenue (next to our Operations Facility) and city teams are supporting protection efforts at Isabella Dicken Elementary School and along 4th Street.
Residents can help by eliminating non‑essential water use and ensuring sump pumps, downspouts, and perimeter drains are not connected to the sanitary sewer system.
