Fernie represented at international conference
Fernie was recently represented at the 2018 International Snow Science Workshop (ISSW) held in Innsbruck, Austria.
This biennial conference held in North America and Europe brings together researchers and practitioners from all over the world to facilitate the interdisciplinary exchange of ideas and experiences.
In 2016, Fernie was selected as the Canadian location for the 2020 ISSW Conference, which will be held in Fernie, October 4-9, 2020. This six-day conference will welcome more than 1,000 participants from 25 countries and poised to generate between $1.5-$2 million for the Fernie economy, benefiting accommodation, retail, dining, activity, transportation and service industry.
Members from Elk Valley Snow and Avalanche Workshop Society (EVSAW) attended the Innsbruck conference in preparation for the 2020 event.
Fernie was featured with a prominently located exhibit, highlighted within conference materials and showcased in the final event of the conference, Fernie Night. Important networking connections were made with the organizing committees, industry partners and the 1,100+ attendees representing over 27 countries.
The EVSAW Society is a not-for-profit organization created to support the ISSW 2020 conference and contribute to ongoing avalanche awareness and education in Fernie and surrounding area.
On November 10, Fernie will play host to the first ever Elk Valley Snow Avalanche Workshop. This one-day event serves as a lead-in to the 2020 conference, welcoming avalanche professionals and recreationalists alike to engage in a day of collective discussion and engaging presentations on a variety of winter backcountry topics. Vendors and operators will also be on hand demonstrating the latest in equipment and services to public.
