Fernie resident killed in mobile home fire

An elderly Fernie resident was killed in a Feb. 15 mobile home fire in the city.

Fernie Fire Rescue (FFR) was notified of a structure fire in the Fernie Mobile Home Park at 11:19 a.m. on February 15. FFR responded with five vehicles and 20 firefighters. Upon arrival, the mobile home was fully engulfed in fire.

After the initial attack and flame extinguishment, FFR was able to gain access to the home where the homeowner was found.

Sadly, the homeowner perished due to the environment and difficulties in exiting the home.

Working with the RCMP and the BC Coroner Service, as well as through FFR’s own investigation, it was determined that this fire was accidental, the department reported today (Feb. 17).

Fernie Fire Rescue would like to remind residents to check that their smoke alarms are installed and operational, and that access into and out of their homes is kept clear.
