Fernie SAR rescues lost snowmobiler

Fernie and District Search and Rescue (SAR) was tasked at 6 p.m. on Saturday night by Elk Valley RCMP to search for a lost snowmobiler.

A 28-year-old male became separated from his riding partner in the Pipeline area above Morrissey, near ‘the Notch,’ Fernie SAR reported on its Facebook page.

“After a three-hour search by the riding partner, also assisted by other riders in the area, the decision was taken to call search and rescue crews.

With nightfall and a heavy snowstorm underway, Fernie SAR was unable to launch any aircraft, so four members were dispatched on sleds to search the area.

“Fortunately, they were able to locate the lost rider at around 10 p.m. He had been forced to abandon his sled and was attempting to walk out. Other than being cold and dehydrated, he was in good shape and able to accompany the rescuers back to town,” SAR related.
