Fernie Substation work underway

Kootenay East MLA and Minister of Energy and Mines Bill Bennett and City of Fernie Mayor Mary Giuliano visited the site of the Fernie Substation Upgrade on Friday, September 16.

During the upgrades, part of the Kootenay Elk Trail will be temporarily re-routed as it passes the skateboard park, and parking will be relocated across Ridgemont Drive. The skateboard park is expected to remain accessible throughout the project. The $24 million project will bring improvements that include automated switching that should mean less power stoppages for Fernie and area clients.

Work has begun to clear the site in preparation of construction, starting in October with completion in slated for 2018.

This work won’t prevent use of the skateboard park situated right next to the site, noted Mayor Giuliano.
