FFR issues warning about river ice

Recent sightings of individuals near and around the Elk River have caused Fernie Fire Rescue to issue the following advisory.

DANGERS OF RIVER ICE

River ice is dangerous ice! Underwater currents can cause thin spots to develop regardless of temperature and appearance. And not only is there the problem of thin spots, but once a person falls through, the current on the river could carry them downstream. People are at risk of hypothermia within minutes of entry into cold water.

Attempting to walk on river ice not only endangers yourself, it puts the lives of first responders at unnecessary risk. To stay safe, stay well away from river ice.
