Investigations underway at Fernie Arena
RCMP officers are currently conducting their on-scene investigation at Fernie Memorial Arena. While this is underway, RCMP have full control of the arena and the City of Fernie and other agencies do not have any access to the facility.
Once the RCMP has concluded its on-scene investigation of the arena, following the tragic ammonia leak Oct. 17 that claimed three lives, WorksafeBC will take control of the arena to conduct its investigation.
“At this point, we do not have a timeline as to when RCMP, WorksafeBC, and any other agencies will finish their investigations and return the facility to the city. As such, we are unable to provide any information regarding when re-entry into the building to reclaim any belongings will be possible, or when the arena may be operational again,” the City of Fernie stated on its website today (Nov. 16).
“The city continues to cooperate with authorities as they try to determine the cause of the accident and, along with the community, we await their findings. We appreciate the community’s ongoing patience while authorities continue their investigation.”
