Joy riders charged
Elk Valley RCMP have charged two men from Saskatchewan for being drunk in public after they opted to take a taxi home early Saturday morning in Fernie.
“While the RCMP fully supports and encourages people using taxis and designated drivers to make their way home from the bar, they also encourage people to travel inside the vehicles while doing so,” said Cpl. Robert Wright of Elk Valley RCMP.
The taxi caught the eye of police as it left the Fernie downtown core with one person hanging off the roof and another crouched on the bumper. Police were able to stop the taxi as it entered Highway 3 unaware of the extra passengers. The taxi, which was about to travel out of town on the highway, would have likely reached speeds of 80 plus km/h an hour which could have proved fatal had they fallen off, Wright said.
