Kyle Hamilton to seek candidacy for Mayor of Fernie

Councillor Kyle Hamilton has officially announced his intention to run for Mayor of the City of Fernie in the municipal election taking place this October.

Hamilton, who has served the community as a city councillor for the past two terms, said his decision is rooted in a strong commitment to Fernie and its future.

“Like many in our community, I was disappointed to learn that Mayor Nic Milligan has chosen not to seek another term,” said Hamilton.

“I respect his decision and have thanked him personally for his decades of service to Fernie, both as a private citizen and over the past four years as mayor.”

Hamilton’s eight years on council have provided him with both the breadth and depth of experience needed to work collaboratively with council, staff, and senior governments, he noted in a media release.

He believes this experience positions him well to guide Fernie through its next chapter.

During that time, the community has faced significant challenges, including the COVID-19 pandemic, the closure of the Fernie Community Centre, housing pressures, limited daycare availability, and rising costs of living. Despite these challenges, Hamilton points to tangible progress.

“Fernie has risen to every challenge,” he said.

“New daycare spaces are being added, affordable housing projects are moving forward, a new fire hall is on the horizon, and we continue to work with the province on critical wastewater treatment upgrades. These are successes worth building upon.”

Hamilton emphasized the need for experienced leadership as Fernie grapples with aging infrastructure and growing financial pressures.

“Fernie needs a mayor who understands the real impacts of failing infrastructure and who has the experience to advocate for updated funding models from senior governments. We need a new model that helps reduce the burden on local taxpayers while protecting essential services.”

Hamilton says community engagement will remain central to his campaign.

“I hope residents will support me as we draw on our shared experiences to guide Fernie toward a future where everyone can live, work, and play,” he said.

“I look forward to many conversations in the months ahead and, as always, I’m happy to meet for a coffee or a beer to listen, answer questions, and hear what matters most to our community.”
