Man charged for lighting fire

Elk Valley RCMP has charged a Fernie man under the Wildfire Act after he started a fire on his property.

The charge which carries a fine of $1,150 isn’t typically used. However, considering the province is under its longest state of emergency in history due to the extreme fire hazard in the area, combined with the fact that the Fernie Fire Department had to attend to put the fire out, police felt the charge more than reasonable, explained Cpl. Robert Wright of Elk Valley RCMP.
