Solid waste rates to rise next three years
City of Fernie council Jan. 28 adopted an amendment bylaw to enable the city to cover the costs of waste containers now required for residential pickup.
Council passed third reading and adopted Amendment Bylaw No. 2371, 2019; A bylaw to amend Waste Regulation Bylaw No. 1845 allowing the city to increase fees and charges for residential waste removal by two per cent per year in 2019, 2020 and 2021.
The bylaw amendment adds a revised section – 4.2 Acceptable Residential Waste Containers: “Each dwelling unit will be provided with two standardized carts – a 120 L wildlife resistant cart for garbage with a locking lid designed to reduce wildlife access, and a 240L cart for recycling. On collection days, only these carts will be picked up by the automated collection trucks. Each cart will also be equipped with an RFID tag that is registered to the specific dwelling unit, providing an enhanced tracking system.”
