Investigation, recovery slows Highway 3 at Rock Cuts
Elk Valley RCMP and Commercial Vehicle Enforcement (CVSE) are investigating an early morning collision on Highway 3 between Fernie and Elko.
At approximately 8 a.m. (Nov. 16) Emergency crews responded to a semi truck that had lost control and hit the cement barricade near the section of highway known as the ‘Rock Cuts.’ No one was hurt as a result of the collision; however, the recovery of the truck will mean travellers on Highway 3 are going to see alternating lane closures and the possibility of a complete shut down.
The best estimate for the complete recovery of the vehicle and opening of both lanes of traffic is 2 p.m. today.
Drivers are encouraged to check DriveBC for future updates.
“The Elk Valley is currently experiencing a heavy melt / freeze cycle that was preceded by a heavy rain fall in the area. As a result, the RCMP has seen an increase of motor vehicle collisions on all highways in the area over the last 48 hours,” reported Cpl. R. Wright of Elk Valley RCMP.
“The dipping over night and early morning temperatures are causing black ice and packed snow in some areas. Drivers are reminded to slow down and drive to the road conditions, check highway conditions often before travelling and to make sure their vehicles have proper winter tires,” Cpl. Wright recommends.
