Logjam on the Elk concerning
Fernie Fire Rescue and the City of Fernie have installed two signs above a dangerous logjam on the Elk River, located about 500 metres above Fernie Golf Course.
Fernie Search and Rescue rescued a boy who sucked into the logjam last weekend. Incredibly, the boy was not badly injured.
“The logjam spans 70% of the currently navigable water with strong currents flowing directly into the log jam. As river levels are dropping quickly this logjam is getting more dangerous. Safest option is to get out on river left and walk the easy gravel bar. Not recommended to put in at the Dicken Road put-in for recreational ‘floats’. BEST put in is the North Fernie bridge,” Fernie SAR noted on its Facebook page.
Considering the volume of recreational river traffic on the river at this time of year, officials acted to warn boaters and anglers.
One warning sign is located 200 metres upstream and another is just above the major hazard.
“Please heed the warning and walk around this logjam, and please share with you floating friends,” said City of Fernie firefighter Brendan Eamonn Morgan, who shared the following images on Facebook.
