Man secured after eight-hour lockdown in Sparwood

On November 15, at approximately 2:45 a.m., Elk Valley Regional RCMP responded to a report of a check well-being in the 100 block of Aspen Drive in Sparwood.

The initial report indicated that a 30-year-old man may be in possession of a firearm and wanted to commit some level of self-harm.

As officers arrived on scene and were preparing to attend the residence, a single rifle shot was heard coming from the general area of the residence. As a result, further support units from the Southeast District as well as BC Ambulance and Sparwood Fire were contacted and attended to assist with the investigation.

The area around the subject residence was secured and several residences around the location were advised and escorted off or told to shelter in place. Police presence near Highway 43 and Aspen Drive was noticeable as a result, so Elk Valley RCMP issued a post on social media for public awareness toward the outset of the event, police reported this afternoon.

The man’s family and the homeowner made contact with Police and were given additional support from Victim Services.

Once the Southeast District Containment and Emergency Response Teams arrived on scene, they worked quickly and were able to enter the suspect’s residence and safely apprehend the man involved under the Mental Act of BC.

The man was located uninjured and cooperated fully with the arresting officers. Several firearms and ammunition, including a rifle containing a spent round in the chamber, were located and seized for further investigation.

The man involved was taken to a local area hospital to receive care. The homeowner and family were all notified of the outcome directly. RCMP consider there to be no further risk to the public at this time, said S/Sgt. Svend Nielsen, Elk Valley RCMP Detachment commander.

“The Elk Valley Regional RCMP would like to thank all local residents for their cooperation during the eight-hour long lockdown of their Sparwood residential area. Our investigation is ongoing.”
