Severe conditions in Elk Valley; KNP closed

Highway 3 at Hosmer

The Elk Valley area is currently experiencing a severe winter event with blowing snow, freezing rain and slippery conditions, Mainroad East Kootenay Contracting reports this morning.

Rainfall followed by a drop in temperatures has created ice and compact snow. Highway 43 in the Sparwood area has been reported as extremely slippery. Mainroad crews are responding but motorists should expect extreme conditions this morning.

DriveBC notes conditions in the Elk Valley include limited visibility with heavy snowfall, water pooling and compact snow with slippery sections.

Other areas of the East Kootenay are also experiencing bad conditions such as black ice in the Goatfel and Moyie areas

Highway 95 at Brisco

The Columbia Valley is also experiencing poor highway conditions, with Highway 93 closed through Kootenay National Park at this time.

Highway 1 is also closed between Revelstoke and Golden due to avalanche hazard.

Please check www.DriveBC.ca and consider waiting if travel is not essential.

If you see an issue on East Kootenay highways, please contact Mainroad’s 24 hour hotline, 1-800-665-4929.

Note: The Sparwood area DriveBC camera has been out of service for about a week now.
