Coal Miner Days dropping parade

A major aspect of Sparwood’s Coal Miner Days annual party will be missing this year.

District of Sparwood Mayor David Wilks May 3 reported to fellow Regional District of East Kootenay directors that the annual parade has been scratched from the event.

“The community is having tremendous challenges with volunteerism,” Wilks said, pointing at issues with shift work at the mines as one of several reasons.

The small and weary group of Coal Miner Days Society volunteers needs plenty of help and if none is forthcoming, Wilks said, the entire weekend festival could be in jeopardy of being cancelled next year.

“If improvements don’t happen, I would strongly suggest Coal Miner Days won’t happen next year,” he said.

While the parade is gone, there is still plenty to see, do and eat at this year’s Coal Miner Days, June 8-11.
