Post apartment fire need-to-know: district

We first want to thank all emergency personnel and volunteers who responded (and are still responding) to the Sparwood Heights apartment fire for their hard work and dedication. Our community is amazing.

We are trying to process all the information that is coming in but for now here is some for those affected by the fire and those who want to help:

Residents of Ponderosa

1. All those affected by the fire are asked to check in with the Emergency Social Services (ESS) team at the Reception Centre which has been opened up at the Sparwood Leisure Centre (located at 367 Pine Avenue) so that you can be registered and start the process of receiving emergency funding. If you have any questions please contact the ESS Director, Joyce Kutzner at 250-425-4752.
2. Western Financial in Sparwood (110 Centennial Street) is open to help start your claim. Even if you do not have a policy with them, you can use their phone/fax/email and ask them questions on how to start your claim. They can also issue a temporary ID if you have lost yours.
3. The Sparwood Library is open for anyone who needs help and their computers, fax, scanning, etc. are available for your use.
4. Place to Play Daycare has some availability today and you can drop your children off with them if you need time to get things done. Call or text 250-425-9121.
5. Dee’s Pizza has offered free supper to those who lost their home, please call them directly at 250-425-0277.
6. The Salvation Army Thrift Store in Fernie will provide you with clothing and other essential needs (up to $50). You will need to obtain a voucher from ESS at the Reception Centre.

Donations

1. Clothing: The Elk Valley Thrift Shop has setup a table at the Leisure Centre and can take clothing and small items (toiletries, personal items, diapers, etc) only at this time;
2. Furniture and other large items: please email [email protected] with your contact information and we will be in touch you when the items are needed.
3. Gift Cards: Are most welcome and can be dropped off at the Leisure Centre.
4. Food: Unfortunately, we cannot accept any homemade food. Please contact the ESS Director to find out how you can help.

Volunteers

1. Please call the ESS Director, Joyce Kutzner, at 250-425-4752 to volunteer!
2. Thrift Shop could use help sorting donations this afternoon at the rec centre.

Thank you and we will update as more information comes in.
