Sparwood Council Facts

Utility rate increase proposed for Sparwood

The District of Sparwood’s Director of Finance submitted a report to council Oct. 17 outlining proposed rate increases to utility rates for 2012 – 2014.  The Columbia Basin Trust Water Smart Group has advised that transition to water metering works best if there is a period during which residents continue to pay their utility bills based on flat rates and receive meter consumption information so that they are aware of their water usage and can reduce their consumption if needed.  The District is expecting to move to the metered rates in 2013, however, if we experience issues with software or unusual consumption, we may defer the move to 2014.

Accordingly proposed rate increases of 4% to water, 6% to sewer and 6% to garbage are scheduled for January 1 of each year in 2012 to 2014.

Toilet rebate program still on

Don’t forget to participate in the District of Sparwood’s Toilet Rebate Program.  All you have to do is replace an existing 13L or greater toilet with an eligible low flow model and you can receive $100 back from the district.

Toilets send more than 30% of the water used inside your home into our sanitary sewer system. By reducing the amount of water people flush down the toilet we can reduce the hydraulic loading and extend the life of the existing waste water treatment plant.  To learn more about our Water Smart goals and programs please visit our website at www.Sparwood.ca/watersmart.

Halloween

Halloween can be an exciting time for children and with the distraction of candy and costumes, safety rules can easily be forgotten.  Drivers please slow down and watch for children, many of whom may be dressed in dark costumes.   Don’t send the little ones out on their own even if they are only going to walk around the neighborhood. Children should not go out alone. An adult or older sibling should accompany the kids on their Halloween trick or treat rounds to keep a watch on them and make sure they are safe.
